Day Of Mourning for First Nations People

We join to commemorate all Sovereign First Peoples who defended and died in the Frontier Wars, massacres across Australia, as well as those who continue to die in custody to this day.

A large crowd gathered at Kings Domain Resting Place, Melbourne where chairperson of the Vic NAIDOC Committee Stacie Piper (Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung) presided as MC. Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin, Senior Wurundjeri elder performed Welcome to Country.

John Pattern a (Bundjalung and Yorta Yorta) man shared the history regarding this day of mourning. This event was supported by many elders including the Djirri Djirri Dancers and Jeremy Nikora and Te Hononga O Nga Iwi Maori group supporting the people of this land.

Through their resilience, courage, bravery and sacrifice protecting families, communities and Country they will always be remembered.

We recognise that colonisation and genocide are ongoing processes that continue to this day and that Sovereignty over Country was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
