Sonya Hunt Working to Support Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Students

Sonya Hunt is a Barkindji woman. She has lived here in Melbourne for 8 years. Sonya is a Koorie Education Student Officers (KESO). She works alongside other KESO’s to support all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in whatever they need to complete school.

The KESOs take care of Approx. 250 school aged children each as well as in early childcare to ensure organisations and the school are culturally safe and inclusive. Here in Victoria, there are still a lot of students that are finding hard to reengage into school after lockdown and learning remotely. Sonya has helped to support students to keep them engaged, motivated to learn and stay in school. She talks about these challenging times during the pandemic and how important education is for our young people.
